Liz and Bob met at Grand Rapids (Michigan) Baptist Bible College and were married in Okemos, Michigan in 1964. We applied to Evangelical Baptist Mission to go to Algeria, North Africa, as missionaries. Due to an emergency need for teachers, we spent ten months in Niger, West Africa, in 1969-70 teaching M.K.s
(missionary kids). Our first son, Jonathan, was three years old at the time. Our second son, Daniel, was born while we were in Niger. Because Algeria closed its doors to missionaries in 1970, we spent three terms of four years each in southern France as church planting missionaries. Our third son, David, and our fourth son, Timothy, were born in France. We returned to the USA (Boston) in 1983 to obtain further medical information for our special needs son, Daniel, at the Kennedy-Shriver Foundation and Tufts University. We resigned from EBM in 1984 and moved to Altoona, Iowa. Bob found work at Parr Manufacturing using a mainframe computer for a variety of projects. After a year, he was hired to manage
and computerize a cemetery monument business. From there, he worked at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) as a trainer with an international computer project NovaNet (formerly PLATO). Thanks to a contact by a business trainer at DMACC, Bob was invited to interview for a training job with the Iowa Department of Transportation. Bob was hired as a private consultant to train the
employees of the Maintenance Division to use a computer and their in-house software. This relationship evolved into providing training and software development consulting for Iowa State University/Center for Transportation Research Education (ISU/CTRE). The training of DOT employees evolved into training a variety of city, county, and state officials. Bob retired after 23 years of working with the State of Iowa.
Favorite Verse: Romans 12:1-2, “Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.” (NAU)
